Two people have died and two others have been seriously injured in a shooting in Northern Ireland, police said on Wednesday.
The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) said that there was no ongoing risk to the public from the shooting outside the village of Maguiresbridge in County Fermanagh, located about 120 kilometres southwest of Belfast.
Police and paramedics were called to an address in the village after 7 am local time on Wednesday morning. The injured victims were being treated in two hospitals for serious injuries, the ambulance service said.
The PSNI has not indicted a possible motive. The service said it was not looking for anyone in else in connection with the incident, and that no arrests have been made.
In a post on X, Jemma Dolan, a Sinn Fein member of the Northern Ireland Assembly from the area, called it “a domestic incident.”
“I am in shock but my initial thoughts are with the deceased and their wider family circle,” she wrote. “Please do not speculate, let the investigation run its course.”
Democratic Unionist Party assembly member Deborah Erskine said that the community was “stunned” by the shooting in “a rural, quiet area.”
“Everyone is deeply affected by what has happened this morning,” she said.
“My deepest condolences are with the families of those who have been killed as a result of this incident. Their lives have been turned upside down this morning.”
