Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, has earned its reputation as one of the country’s top family-friendly spots and now there’s a brand-new way to enjoy the destination into the fall.
The Pigeon Forge Racing Coaster recently opened as the country’s first side-by-side racing mountain coaster with speeds reaching up to 30 mph, according to organizers. The ride, which opened in June, raises the stakes compared to other traditional area mountain coasters thanks to two parallel tracks designed for head-to-head competition.
The track is packed with thrills, featuring three 360-degree spirals, an 80-foot double helix, two uphill stretches, and a mid-race bridge that offers the perfect chance to size up your opponent and take in the views. The course glows at night, thanks to a custom LED system that lights up the track. During fall, the ride is especially scenic with foliage colors.
The ride lasts about 10 minutes, and each cart seats up to two riders, making it easy to share the fun and views with family or friends. Leaderboards also track each run so even the closest photo finishes leave no doubt about who came out on top, allowing for bragging rights whether you’re racing a date or even just trying to beat your own personal best time.
The track’s racing credentials come straight from the world of NASCAR, founded by driver B.J. McLeod and his wife and business partner, Jessica McLeod.
“Bringing this racing alpine coaster to life has been a dream fueled by speed, innovation, and a love for adrenaline,” Jessica McLeod said. “We’ve combined the thrill of motorsports with the beauty of the mountains to create an experience unlike anything else—and we can’t wait for guests to Race the Mountain with us.”
To ride, passengers must be at least 3 years old and 38 inches tall to sit with someone who is at least 16 years old. Riders who want to drive the sled must be at least 56 inches tall. Tickets start at $25 for riders 13 and over and $18 for kids. During fall, the ride is especially scenic with foliage colors.
Beyond the new coaster, Pigeon Forge is a family paradise thanks to an incredible mix of attractions for every age. Thrill seekers love Dollywood’s soaring roller coasters (and its iconic cinnamon bread worth raving about), while the area’s plethora of dinner shows, zip lines soaring over the Smokies, and even its full-scale Titanic replica draw families year after year.
From late September through early November the Smoky Mountains light up with color as the leaves change, and the area celebrates in style. Head to Dollywood for the Harvest Festival complete with bluegrass performers and an impressive 40-foot pumpkin tree, or plan a trip to the annual Fall Rod Run where visitors can peep hundreds of show cars.
