When I was in college, I once woke up with my front door wide open. While this was simply because of a faulty door latch, I’ve since never faltered on making sure my doors won’t budge when I’m in the house. The same is true when I travel; I’m constantly setting up DIY contraptions to audibly alert me if someone enters. I don’t mess around when it comes to safety, especially if I am solo traveling. Now, instead of rigging something to crash to the floor if the door handle moves even a centimeter, my Ace Mining Door Security Bar gives me the ultimate peace of mind when I travel.
Since I don’t have my at-home security system when I’m on the road, having a portable door stopper like this iron bar is the first thing I pack in my suitcase. I’ve taken it (actually, two of them) with me everywhere I travel, whether it’s a roadtrip or a flight. Luckily, it’s only $24, so buying multiples to feel safe in return is a no-brainer. I was immediately drawn to the security bar for my travels because it retracts down to 20.8 inches long (so I knew it would fit in my suitcase and even my carry-on if I pack correctly) and because it’s made of iron and can hold up to 397 pounds of force. Plus, at its longest, it reaches 46 inches long, so it’s got coverage against most doors. When I’ve used propped against sliding glass doors at Airbnbs, I swap out the pronged head for the flat end so it fits nicely and securely against the door frame.Â
The first time I propped this under a door and had my husband try to force his way in from the outside, I was shocked at its strength—it didn’t budge, not even a wiggle. On the foot of the bar, the rubber stopper that sits on the floor is key for a non-slip setup. One reviewer noted that it worked great “on carpet and hardwood” and didn’t slip at all.. You just can’t use it on a door mat because the rug will likely slip. And thanks to the 18 pins to adjust the length, it’s easy to find the ideal position to correctly jam the door (which the brand notes is about a 60-degree angle). My family did a four-state road trip last fall, and I was able to keep the pin at the same length for each hotel room door that I use at home, which made it so easy to just pop it under the door handle before bed. I’ve been using this security bar for years, and it’s still in like-new condition, even while it’s getting more use than ever to ease my mind and keep my family safe.Â

Most travel security solutions require a lot of effort to figure out how to attach them to door frames or aren’t compatible with a lot of door styles, but this design takes all of the guesswork and struggle out of propping it up. Aside from its packable size and user-friendly stature, it’s super lightweight and isn’t a hassle to move around. As an over-packer who is notorious for exceeding the luggage weight limit, I’m happy to give up two pounds for this $24 door security bar to keep me feeling safer.
