Top 5 Can’t Miss

  • Every October, fuzzy caterpillars “race” up strings to predict the winter ahead during the quirky Woolly Worm Festival.
  • Whether you drive to the top or hike the trails, Grandfather Mountain is a must-visit come autumn, thanks to its fiery fall foliage, a mile-high swinging bridge, and wildlife habitats.
  • Nothing says fall quite like apple picking, and nearby orchards deliver with crisp fruit, hot cider, and seasonal homemade treats.
  • Stonewalls Restaurant is a local favorite, serving hearty dishes in a welcoming, small-town atmosphere.
  • For a charming stay, The Perry House Bed & Breakfast offers cozy accommodations in a historic home with mountain views and a warm, inviting environment.

North Carolina’s High Country is best known for its rolling Blue Ridge landscapes, crisp mountain air, and small towns that ooze charm, especially when autumn rolls around. While Boone and Blowing Rock often attract most of the fall season crowds, just down the road lies Banner Elk, a hidden gem in the North Carolina mountains.

This town of about 1,200 residents comes alive in autumn with quirky traditions, breathtaking foliage, and family-friendly activities that showcase the best of the season. From the famous Woolly Worm Festival, where locals cheer on fuzzy caterpillars in tiny races, to cozy afternoons at apple orchards and scenic drives up to Grandfather Mountain, fall here feels festive.

Having grown up near the Blue Ridge Mountains, I’ve visited plenty of mountain towns along the East Coast, but Banner Elk stands out. Here’s how to make the most of a fall getaway to this mountain hideaway.

Best Things to Do

Guests enjoy the Woolly Worm Festival.

Visit NC

Attend the Woolly Worm Festival.

Every October, thousands flock to Banner Elk for its most unique tradition: the Woolly Worm Festival. “It’s the only festival in North Carolina where you can race a worm up a string for a chance to predict the winter weather,” said Nancy Owen, tourism director for Banner Elk. According to Owen, more than 20,000 people attend the two-day festival. “It’s a wonderful family atmosphere with something for all ages. Whether you want to race a worm, eat some funnel cake, shop the local art and craft vendors, or listen to live music, you’re guaranteed a fun time,” she added. After being canceled last year due to Hurricane Helene, locals are especially eager to bring the celebration back on Oct. 18 and 19, welcoming visitors as the town continues its recovery.

Explore Grandfather Mountain.

One of North Carolina’s most iconic peaks, Grandfather Mountain is not far from Banner Elk and offers some of the best fall views in the state. Hike one of its rugged trails, snap photos from the Mile High Swinging Bridge, or visit the wildlife habitats along the way, which are home to black bears, elk, and eagles. In autumn, the mountainside is blanketed in reds, golds, and oranges, making it a leaf peeper’s dream.

Visit Apple Hill Farm.

This working alpaca farm is a charming stop that’s especially popular in the fall. Guests can take guided tours to meet the alpacas, donkeys, and other animals, while learning about sustainable farming practices. Note, although the property does have apple trees, it’s not a pick-your-own orchard, so don’t expect to go apple picking here.

Go apple picking at a nearby orchard.

Nothing says fall quite like apple picking. The Orchard at Altapass, right off the Blue Ridge Parkway, is a local favorite where you can wander through the rows, pick your own apples, and enjoy live music and homemade treats. It’s a classic autumn outing that pairs perfectly with the views.

Take a scenic drive.

Banner Elk is ideally located near some of the most stunning stretches of the Blue Ridge Parkway. Just a short drive away, you’ll find overlooks bursting with color in October, making it one of the most photographed regions in the southeast during the fall.

Best Places to Stay

The Perry House Bed & Breakfast

This historic inn, situated on a hill overlooking the mountains, is a favorite among fall travelers. Five guest rooms offer a warm, homey ambience that makes you feel more like a visiting friend than a hotel guest. In autumn, the expansive porch is ideal for sipping coffee in the morning and winding down with a glass of wine in the evening.

The Lodge at Banner Elk

If you’re traveling with kids or prefer the convenience of modern amenities, The Lodge at Banner Elk is a great choice. Located just minutes from downtown, this property has 100 spacious rooms, a pool, and a family-friendly atmosphere. Its location makes it easy to head out for a day of adventure and return to comfort at night.

Best Places to Eat

Visit NC

Mountain Grounds Coffee & Tea Co.

Start your morning with a visit to this cozy coffee shop. From rich lattes and mochas to fresh cinnamon rolls, bagels, and breakfast burritos, they have all the essentials.

Banner Elk Cafe

A local staple, the Banner Elk Cafe combines comfort food with a laid-back vibe. The menu is extensive, with everything from burgers to mahi, and live music often adds to the atmosphere. It’s the kind of place where you can show up in hiking boots after a day on the trails and still feel right at home.

Stonewalls Restaurant

If you’re looking for something a bit more upscale, but still welcoming, Stonewalls is the place to go. Known for its steaks and fresh seafood, the restaurant has been a tradition in Banner Elk for more than 40 years. The warm wood interiors and attentive service make it ideal for a fancy dinner.

Best Time to Visit

Fall is the shining star in Banner Elk. October is my favorite time to visit because it’s peak festival season and typically the best time for vibrant foliage. The Woolly Worm Festival takes place in mid-October, drawing crowds for its races, parades, and live music.

September is quieter, but still offers cooler weather, while November brings late-season color and fewer visitors, making it an ideal time for a more peaceful getaway.

Owen agrees fall is a beautiful time to visit Banner Elk. “One thing that makes Banner Elk so beautiful during the fall is the changing colors. Banner Elk is situated in a valley surrounded by Beech Mountain and Sugar Mountain, which have mile-high peaks. It’s fun to watch the colors change from the top of the peaks down to the valley.”

She added, “Our small businesses really get into the fall season with festive displays of pumpkins and mums.”

How to Get There

Banner Elk is tucked into the High Country of western North Carolina, about 1.5 hours from Asheville and 2.5 hours from Charlotte. The nearest airport is Asheville Regional (AVL), although many visitors fly into Charlotte Douglas International (CLT) and take the scenic drive.

How to Get Around

A car is the best way to explore Banner Elk and its surrounding mountains. Downtown is walkable, but most attractions, including Grandfather Mountain, orchards, and the Blue Ridge Parkway, require a short drive. Additionally, parking is generally easy, although festival weekends can be particularly busy.

Know Before You Go

Banner Elk is a small, intimate, and community-oriented town. Fall weekends can get busy, especially during the Woolly Worm Festival, so book lodging early.

Another helpful tip: Pack layers. Mountain mornings and evenings can be chilly, while afternoons often warm up enough that you’ll want to shed a jacket or sweater. Lastly, if you’re planning a leaf-peeping trip in the fall, check local foliage reports, as peak color timing varies year to year.
