Want to Try Tesla’s Robotaxi Service? It’s Supposedly Launching in Austin in June

Tesla plans to launch its robotaxi self-driving “Cybercab” vehicles in Austin, Texas, on June 12, according to a report from Bloomberg.

The news outlet cited a source close to the plans who revealed the date, which is in line with remarks Tesla CEO Elon Musk has made about a launch window of June in locations including Texas and California.

Tesla first unveiled a design and plan for its robotaxi service back in October at an event at Warner Bros Studios. Musk’s timeline for production of the vehicle, which he said at the time would cost below $30,000, was set to begin next year, so the vehicles on the road in June will likely be existing Tesla models such as the Model Y. A larger “Robovan” that could transport 20 people at a time is likely not part of the launch.

On Thursday, Musk said in a post on X that Tesla has been testing self-driving Model Y cars on public Austin streets “with no incidents.” He wrote, “Next month, first self-delivery from factory to customer.”

According to Fortune, officials in the city of Austin have not yet received critical information from Tesla about the project, such as first-responder guidebooks or what level of autonomous driving the vehicles are using at launch.

Waymo already runs a self-driving ride-hailing service in Austin, which covers about 37 square miles and operates with Uber.

A representative for Tesla did not immediately respond to a request for more information.
