There’s nothing worse than hitting the trail with hiking shoes that don’t fit properly. Rubbing turns into hotspots, and before you know it, you’re doctoring painful blisters instead of soaking in the fall foliage. After working as an outdoor gear outfitter for years, I know how difficult it can be for folks with wide feet to find comfy shoes among a sea of narrow boots. I’ve heard the horror stories, and I’m here to help.

Thanks to the input of my wide-footed friends and hundreds of customers, I’ve created a list of the best high-volume footwear for blister-free bliss in the great outdoors. Whether you’re looking for bonus toe room, fan-favorites with wide sizing options, or rugged, extra-wide boots, I’m confident you’ll find a pair that fits like a glove.

Best Hiking Shoes for Wide Feet

Women’s Hiking Shoes for Wide Feet

Merrell Women’s Moab 3 Mid Waterproof Hiking Boot

Amazon

It should come as no surprise that our pick for the best overall hiking boot offers a great fit to hikers of all shapes and sizes. Merrell’s Moab 3 is one of my immediate answers when anyone asks me for hiking boot recommendations due to their cushioned footbed, sticky Vibram rubber soles, and durable leather construction. They’re already pretty roomy in the standard width, so the wide option fits most wide feet well. For even more room, consider going up a half size. If you’re looking for a fantastic all-around hiking boot, don’t miss these while they’re 41 percent off at Amazon right now.

Columbia Women’s Crestwood Hiking Shoe

Amazon

I’m always impressed by Columbia’s ability to come up with high-quality gear at a budget-friendly price point, and these Crestwood hiking shoes are no exception. A lightweight suede and mesh combination upper gives these boots the perfect blend of durability and airiness—if there’s one thing I love more than affordable gear, it’s affordable gear that’s built to last. I’m also an advocate for this pair’s height, landing somewhere between a shoe and a boot for a great balance of support and range of motion. If you’re looking for a wide, spacious boot, these are a no-brainer, especially while they’re on sale for just $65 at Amazon.

Altra Women’s Lone Peak 9 Trail-running Shoe

REI

In my experience as an outfitter, Altra has always been my go-to suggestion whenever a customer walks in complaining about foot problems. Known for its wide toe boxes and zero-drop construction that keeps your heel and toes level, the Lone Peak 9 shoes place your feet in a more natural position than traditional footwear. This pair offers those classic Altra features, and they’re also an exceptional pair of hiking shoes in their own right. Sticky rubber outsoles and thick lugs provide great traction, and the ripstop uppers are lightweight and breathable. Even better, they come in wide sizes, so people of all foot shapes can hike without cramped toes.

New Balance Women’s Fresh Foam X Hierro V9 Trail-running Shoe

Amazon

If you’ve tried other wide-sized trail runners on the market and found that they’ve still been too narrow, this next pick might be just what you’ve been searching for. Starting with the technical side of things, these New Balance trail runners incorporate a tough impact-reducing toe box and a Vibram rubber sole to tackle anything the outdoors throws at you with ease. With a thick layer of foam sandwiched in the middle, you’ll feel like you’re walking on clouds. And it just gets better—these shoes also come in wide and extra-wide sizing, so there’s plenty of room for everyone.

La Sportiva Women’s Bushido III Trail-running Shoe

REI

After years of commotion, La Sportiva finally released its Bushido trail runner in wide sizing options, and I, for one, say it was about time. These shoes are constructed so that they wrap snugly around your entire foot—as a result, they feel incredibly secure and get ahead of the rubbing and chafing that leads to blisters. Though the interiors wear like a comfortable sock, the outside of these shoes is far tougher, covered in ripstop paneling and thick rubber lugs. When you put those pieces together, you end up with a lightweight, all-terrain shoe ready to tackle any trail. The brand suggests you order a half size up for a less technical fit, and as the owner of several pairs of La Sportiva footwear, I second that advice.

Oboz Women’s Sawtooth X Low B-dry Hiking Shoe

Amazon

My personal pair of hiking boots for the past couple of years has been Oboz Sawtooths, so I was thrilled to learn that they come in wide sizing. Not all wide sizes are created equally, but in my years of experience, I’ve talked to enough shoppers to report that these are the real deal. On top of that, these are one of the comfiest pairs of hiking shoes that I’ve tried. The soft insoles molded to my feet like slippers, and the nubuck leather was perfect out of the box without a long and painful break-in period. I can vouch for their durability, too, after trekking hundreds of miles without any serious signs of wear.

Danner Women’s Mountain 600 Leaf Gtx Hiking Boot

REI

Another pick that looks as great as they feel, these Danner Mountain 600 boots blend top-notch craftsmanship with a timeless design and cute autumnal color options. The brand takes its full-grain leather uppers seriously, running the material through six different tests before it’s allowed to come anywhere near your feet. Under those sturdy leather exteriors, a Gore-tex liner keeps you high and dry, preventing water from entering while shedding unwanted moisture. Though they don’t explicitly advertise a wide toe box, I’ve found these boots to be roomier in the toes than the average pair, and they come in wide sizing for extra space.

Men’s Hiking Shoes for Wide Feet

Keen Men’s Targhee 4 Mid Waterproof Hiking Boot

Amazon

I’ve been a big fan of Keen’s footwear for years, and the latest update to its Targhee line, the Targhee 4, is another easy recommendation for me. While they may rock the look of a conventional leather boot, this pair is anything but. A fabric membrane nestled within the uppers allows these boots to remain breathable, despite their waterproofing, and their fusion-bonded soles mean you won’t catch this pair peeling apart on the trail. Best of all, a spacious toe box creates plenty of wiggle room for your toes, especially when you pick up a wide pair.

Salomon Men’s X Ultra 5 Mid Gtx Hiking Boot

REI

After hearing my dad, my original hiking partner, sing the praises of Salomon’s outdoor footwear for years, I’m convinced that there’s something special here. To me, these sleek X Ultra 5 boots feel like the footwear of the future. Kevlar textile uppers give them unbeatable abrasion resistance, and Gore-tex waterproofing means the elements won’t get into these boots either. For a full-height boot, these are surprisingly light, which only adds to the comfort of their specially molded insoles and supportive outsole inserts. Once you’ve picked these up in wide, you can also tailor your fit even closer with the brand’s highly adjustable lacing system.

Danner Men’s Trail 2650 Hiking Shoe

REI

With all of the appeal of a hiking boot in a smaller, lighter form factor, these Danner Trail 2650s pay homage to their beefier boot predecessors, just with some additional modern touches. Well-placed ventilation holes throughout the leather uppers and a mesh lining work to keep even the sweatiest feet from slipping and sliding. When paired with a special heel system designed to lock your foot in place and grippy Vibram rubber soles, you’ll stay firmly planted on the trail in this pair. It’s worth noting that these shoes aren’t the widest of the wide, but in their wide sizing option, there’s enough room for most shoppers to feel comfortable and satisfied.

Topo Athletic Men’s Ultraventure 4 Trail-running Shoe

Amazon

If you ever find yourself in the company of thru-hikers racking up big miles on the Appalachian or Pacific Crest Trail, I almost guarantee you’ll spot more than a couple pairs of Topo trail runners. Like Altra, this brand is beloved by hikers who sing the praises of a generous toe box. If you’re not ready to make the switch to zero-drop shoes or have found them uncomfortable in the past, the Ultraventure 4 is “low-drop,” offering many of the same benefits to your feet without feeling as dramatically different. Besides the fit, this pair is equipped with some of my favorite grippy rubber soles of any trail runner on the market. You’ll trust your feet in this pair, and with all the pampering they offer, your feet just might trust you back.

Skechers Men’s Afterburn M. Fit Shoe

Amazon

Though Skechers might not be the first brand that comes to mind when you think about hiking shoes, the brand managed to squeeze the comfort of its sneakers into a sturdy outdoor package with this pair. If standard wide shoes are still too narrow, I definitely recommend that you take a look a the Afterburn M. Fits. With a large range of sizes and color options in both wide and extra-wide, everyone’s bound to find a pair that fits. Once you’ve found your size and have these shoes laced up on your feet, you’ll immediately appreciate their cushy memory foam inserts, tough but flexible midsoles, and cooling mesh panels.

Lowa Men’s Renegade Evo Gtx Mid Hiking Boot

REI

Lowa has been in the boot game for over a hundred years, and in that time, it’s learned how to craft a pair for any foot. The rugged Renegade Evo leather boots sport a soft, shock-absorbing midsole layered over grippy Vibram rubber for a comfortable, slip-free experience on the trail. Gore-tex waterproofing means they’re also seriously waterproof without sacrificing breathability. Of course, these boots come in a wide option—if you’re prone to heel slipping or frustrating pressure points, you’ll also love the independently adjustable lacing zones, which allow you to tweak your fit to perfection.

Meindl Men’s Comfort-fit Walker Gtx Waterproof Shoe

Amazon

Designed with a wide foot in mind, this pair from Meindl stands out from the crowd by offering an “EE” or extra-wide size option. Don’t think for a second that these Italian-made shoes are cutting corners due to their inclusive sizing, though. The waxed full-grain leather uppers look great on the trail or around town, and cork midsoles provide shock absorption on any terrain. Like many of my favorite picks, these boots also utilize a wide toe box, minimizing blisters and maximizing comfort. If you try this pair out for on-trail usage, you just might find you don’t want to take them off once you’re back in civilization.

Jim Green Men’s Barefoot African Ranger Hiking Boot

Amazon

Another high-tech pick with a retro feel, these Jim Green boots utilize a time-honored leather upper for its durability and looks, but these aren’t your dad’s hiking boots. You might not guess from looking at them, but like some of the most modern hiking footwear on the market, these African Ranger boots have a zero-drop heel and a wide toebox. They’re also barefoot shoes—if you’re not familiar with the term, it suggests a rubber sole that’s thick enough to provide traction and comfort on the trail while practically feeling like it’s not there at all. Most excitingly, these boots all come in “3E” width for extra-wide feet.
