10 Podiatrist-recommended Sandals With Arch Support

Whether it’s a sweltering summer day in the city or you’re jetting off to a warm weather destination mid-winter, sometimes sneakers are just not an option for hot feet. Many travelers opt for open-toe designs like sandals or flip flops instead, but podiatrists warn that not every sandal is created equal. 

“A common issue with open-toe sandals is that they lack extra straps or support, causing the foot to become fatigued from constantly keeping the sandal in place,” shares Casey Ann Pidich, D.P.M., the NYC-based podiatrist behind Dr. Glass Slipper. “Without some ankle or foot straps, your feet are more likely to experience discomfort throughout the day.”

Luckily, there are plenty of comfortable sandals that are supportive and will keep your toes cool for all-day wear. Look for styles with a wide toe box to put as little pressure as possible on your toes, says podiatrist Chanel Perkins, D.P.M. You should also look for adjustable straps and sandals with arch support. And, if you can easily bend a shoe in half, you’ll want to avoid it—it’s a clear sign that there isn’t much support. 

Below, I’ve rounded up the 10 best supportive sandals to shop for your upcoming trips that are all recommended by podiatrists, and start at just $35.

Birkenstock Arizona Soft Footbed Slide Sandal

Dr. Perkins praises Birkenstock Arizona sandals as a perfect supportive walking sandal for just about anyone. “The straps are adjustable, which is great for wider feet,” she says. “Also, the footbed sweetly contours to your foot over time, basically creating a custom shoe.” The thick, double straps and arch support offer comfort, plus there’s a variety of colors available from neutrals to vibrant hues and patterns.

Vionic Women’s Cypress Strappy Sandals

“Vionic is a reputable brand with the stamp of approval by the American Podiatric Medical Association (APMA),” says Dr. Perkins, which is why this brand will always make it on any shoe list of hers (and comprises multiple entries on this list from many other podiatrists). These comfortable Vionic Cypress sandals offer a wide enough toe box to avoid any rubbing issues. “The cushioned sole has a great support for arches that will provide long-standing comfort,” Dr. Perkins adds.

When swapping sneakers for sandals, Dr. Perkins says the most important quality to look for is durability, which these Kuru hiking sandals offer. “They have a durable design with extra comfort for flatfeet and also adjustable straps,” she says. They also provide plenty of traction due to the grip of the outsole. “I think of them as a walking shoe disguised as a sandal,” adds Dr. Perkins.

Plus, they’re plenty functional for long days of walking. “[They have] great arch support to reduce strain on soft tissue and joints, a deep heel cup to support the plantar fascia and achilles tendon, and excellent cushioning for better shock absorption,” says Saylee Tulpule, D.P.M., a foot and ankle surgeon. 

Revitalign Yumi Flip Sandal

Flip-flops tend to get a bad rap for their lack of support. “Thin, flat soles can lead to poor shock absorption and increased soft tissue and joint strain. And, flimsy materials can increase the risk of slipping out of the shoe, potentially leading to toe or foot damage,” explains Dr. Tulpule.
